In a speech given in the 1990s Zecharia Sitchin claimed, "There is one more planet in our own solar system, not light years away, that comes between Mars and Jupiter every 3,600 years. People from that planet came to Earth almost half a million years ago and did many of the things about which we read in the Bible, in the book of Genesis." He added, "I prophetize the return of this planet called Nibiru, though I have no time frame. The planet is inhabited by intelligent human beings like us who will come and go between their planet and our planet. They created Homo sapiens. We look like them. I call them the Anunnaki."

Zecharia Sitchin's key ideas are based on the assumption that ancient myths are not myths but historical and scientific texts. According to Sitchin, ancient Sumerian clay tablets reveal that gods from another planet (Nibiru, which orbits our Sun every 3,600 years) arrived on Earth some 450,000 years ago and created humans by genetic engineering of female apes.

He has also made statements concerning the "Olmecs" of ancient Mexico. The discovery of a colossal stone head in 1869 revealed that there may have been an advanced civilization with origins in Africa that preceded the Mayas and Aztecs of Mexico.

Zecharia Sitchin was born in Russia and raised in Palestine, where he acquired a profound knowledge of modern and ancient Hebrew, other Semitic and European languages, the Old Testament, and the history and archeology of the Near East. He is one of the few scholars who is able to read and understand Sumerian. Sitchin attended and graduated from the University of London, majoring in economic history. A leading journalist and editor in Israel for many years, he now lives and writes in New York. His books have been widely translated, converted to Braille for the blind, and featured on radio and television.
